Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann

Homoeopathy

"Homoeopathy is a therapeutic method which assumes that a deviation from the fundamental means within reversible limits can be restorted to normal by means of stimuli, usually applied in the form of drugs, only sub- physiological doses of which are necessary because of hypersensitivity in disease and whose action is always directed towards normal by virtue of altered receptivity of tissue to stimuli in disease."

It is a method of curing the sufferings of a man by the administration of drugs, which have been experimentally proved to posses power of producing similar suffering in a healthy human being.

Homoeopathy is the safest and most scientific system of treatment, discovered by a German Doctor-Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) in 1790. He was a doctor of the then Orthodox system of Medicines and was practicing the same with success. He was very enthusiastic and had a critical and analytical mind, he studied each and every patient in detail and the results of his treatment were also analysed.
After 2 years of practice and inference, he found that the patients once treated for a particular disease returns after a period with a new disease.
He also understood that the new diseases caused were mostly due to the adverse reactions of the drugs taken by them for their previous illness. Thus he came to the conclusion that the treatment given to a patient for curing a disease is causing much damage to the health of the individual rather than cure.
After repeated verification of this fact,he decided to stop the practice of Orthodox system of medicine.Once he wrote to his friend" I have been putting drugs of which I know little into bodies of which I know less; so I can but renounce the practice of medicine that I no longer incur the risk of doing injury"
He was a genius having the knowledge of 14 languages and an authority in subjects like Chemistry, Philosophy, Pharmacy etc. So he engaged in translating books from different languages to German for his livelihood. While translating Cullen's Materia Medica from English to German language, he came upon the remarks of Cullen about the ague- curing property of Cinchona-bark and his explanation of the modus operendi of that drug i.e., by virtue of bitterness, the drug cured the malaria. This explanation did not satisfy Hahnemann. There were plenty of bitter drugs known to him but they did not have the ability to cure malaria. So he decided to test the action of Cinchona-bark on his own body. After talking a few doses of the decotion (tincture) made out of the bark he developed symptoms similar to malarial fever. He realized the power of producing malaria like symptoms in healthy bodies. After this he proved and reproved several other drugs and confirmed the fact that a drug that can cure a disease has the property of producing similar symptoms in a healthy man. He explained this natures law of cure as "Let likes be treated by likes " or " Similia Similibus Curentur". Thus Homoeopathy was born when Hahnemann published an article in Hufeland's journal under the title " An Essay on a New principle for Ascertaining the Curative powers Drugs ". He then conducted years of experiments and study and the complete systemization of the principles and practice of Homoeopathic art of healing was effected with the publication of Hahnemann's Organon of medicine in 1810.

In this Science, the diseased state is assessed in terms of externally expressed symptoms and analysed in relation to the constitutional, mental, emotional and hereditary aspects. This method helps to pinpoint the root cause of the disease and to treat for a radical cure.

The Homoeopathic Medicines are also designed to exclude all the side effects and reactions by minimizing the drugs strength and activating the inherent medicinal properties by potentising the same.

This system differs in many ways from the conventional methods of treatment. The peculiar way of study of disease states, manufacturing and application of medicine are not seen in any other system.

Homoeopathic medicines are prepared by a unique method termed potentisation.

It is done in two steps:
(1) diluting the crud drug with the vehicle (usally Ethyl Alcohol) in a definite proportion and
(2) activation of medicinal properties by succussion or impact mixing.

The medicines prepared in this method in required potency is used in single doses to stimulate the immune system or the vital force to act against the diseased state. Thus Homoeopathic treatment always bringing radical cure i.e., here the vital force itself is engaged in the correction of diseased state, on stimulation received from the Homoeopathic medicine, where as in other systems, medicines are directly engaged in treatment of aliments. There for the cure will always be incomplete or if cured that may cause some side effects.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF HOMOEOPATHY

The three fundamental principles of Homoeopathy are :

  1. Law of Similar Medicine
The medicines used to cure a diseased condition in a patient should have the power of producing similar symptoms when given to a healthy human being.

  2. Law of Single Medicine
In Homeopathic System only one medicine is administered to a patient at a time.

  3. Law of Minimum Dose
Law of Minimum Dose is the optimum dose required to evoke a positive response in a patient.

SOURCES OF DRUGS :

  1. Medicinal plants
  2. Chemicals
  3. Healthy animal products & secretions (Sarcoides)
  4. Diseased Tissues / Secretions of animals (Nosodes)
  5. Energy sources like Sunlight, Moonlight, Electricity, Magnetism etc. (IMPONDERABILIA)

HOMOEOPATHY IN INDIA

Homco india

Homoeopathy was brought to India by European Missionaries, 200 years back. But the official recognition was achieved in 1839 when Dr. John martin Honing Berger during his visit to India, treated Maharaja Renjith Singh of Lahore. There after Homoeopathy showed a steady growth in India and gained the goodwill from India's Great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Ravindra Nath Tagore, Swami Vivekandha, Mother Teresa, Dr.K.R.Narayanan, etc

In 1973 the Indian Parliament passed Homeopathic central council bill and accordingly Homeopathic Central Council was established in 1974. This council is the controlling authority of the educational and practice of Homoeopathy in India. There is also Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy for conducting and monitoring the research activities in Homoeopathy. To provide equal status with other systems, Govt. of India had constituted separate department - Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy under the Ministry of Health and Family welfare.

The Govt of India had constituted a Homeopathic pharmacopoeia committee and published nine volumes of official' Homoeopathic pharmacopoeia of India'. Also a national level drug testing laboratory is functioning at Ghaziabad, New Delhi.

HOMOEOPATHY IN KERALA

Homoeopathy was recognized as an acceptable system of treatment by the Maharaja of Travancore by 1928 itself. A separate Dept. for Homoeopathy was established in Kerala in 1973 and at present there are 525 Govt. Homoeo dispensaries and 31 Homoeo Hospitals with the bed strength of 950.

Academic courses include 5 1/2 year B.H.M.S (graduate level) course and 3 years M.D. (post graduate level) course. There is about 2,00,000 registered Homeopathic Practitioners in India of which 1,00,000 are institutionally qualified.

There are several Homeopathic medicine manufacturing units in India in private sector. But HOMCO is the only institution in the field of Homeopathic Medicine Manufactory in public sector.
